Burgham CIC*** 5th and 6th
Fernhill Adventure (Biscuit) and Wasting Light (Archie) had their first big run of the season with a trip up north to Burgham Horse Trials for the CIC***. It is a 7 hour trek, and my 3rd time doing it, though definitely not my last as it is a superb event with excellent galloping courses and ground, as well as a very helpful, friendly, organised team behind it who work so hard to improve it year on year.
Both were remarkably consistent in the dressage, both scoring 45.6! Archie did a fantastic test - I think his best yet and showing so much more maturity than last year. I thought Biscuits was perhaps closer to a 40, but the marking was quite tough and it was his first time in an international atmosphere since last year. Both show-jumped very well around a huge technical track built by Di Boddy which caused no end of trouble. I had a rail apiece along with a time fault - again very consistent! - which was as much my rustiness as the horses, but I was very pleased with the rounds and the improvement in them.
They both gave me fabulous rides cross-country. As it was early season and they have plenty ahead of them I didn't use my stopwatch but wanted to give them a nice blow and keep a good rhythm around a lovely galloping track. They surprised me by being very close to the time, and fitter than I expected, to finish in 5th (Wasting Light) and 6th (Fernhill Adventure). A very pleasing start to their seasons and one which should set them up nicely for our first Olympic Trial around Belton in three weeks time.
I also had Rienroe Lucky Ranger in the OI and he went very well to do a 35 dressage and double clear to finish 7th on his seasonal debut. My only disappointment was in Colorfast who, after going so well to finish 5th at Lincoln the weekend before, was not at the races at all in the Intermediate. On return we found that he had fractured his splint bone - not a serious injury thankfully but one which will put him off games for a couple of months.
